Belize, a small yet vibrant Central American country, offers an irresistible blend of natural wonders, cultural treasures, and warm hospitality. Our journey through Belize was a thrilling adventure, a mix of pristine beaches, lush jungles and ancient ruins. This diverse destination is a treasure trove of unforgettable experiences.
From the coastal charm of Hopkins Bay and Placencia to the mystical depths of the ATM Cave and the grandeur of ancient Mayan sites like Tikal, every destination offered new perspectives and lasting memories. Below, I have recounted my trip in hopes that it provides you insights into what you might expect if you were to make a trip to this wonderful country.
Belize Highlights: Nature, Culture, and Adventure
Day 1
Arrival in Belize: A Warm Welcome
Touching down in Belize City, I was struck by the small size of the city and its airport—a far cry from bustling international hubs. The modest facilities became even more evident as simultaneous flight arrivals overwhelmed the immigration system, resulting in a wait of over an hour. Once through, however, the adventure began.
Renting a car from Crystal Auto Rental was seamless, as their location was just a short walk from the airport. With everything in order, we hit the road for our first destination: Hopkins Bay.
Hopkins Bay: A Coastal Introduction
A two-hour drive brought us to Hopkins Bay Belize, where a friendly concierge welcomed us and showed us to our room. After a quick freshen-up, we headed to the hotel restaurant for a welcome drink—an incredibly refreshing Rum Punch that was so good, we couldn't resist a second round.
That evening, we stayed close for dinner and were treated to a performance by a local youth cultural heritage group. They showcased Garifuna song and dance, with lively rhythms and traditional performances that made for a vibrant introduction to Belizean culture. The delicious meal served as the perfect accompaniment to this lively performance.
Day 2 -4
Exploring Hopkins Bay
The following day, we hopped on the hotel's complimentary bikes for a leisurely ride to Thongs Beach Café, a cozy beachfront spot. Over breakfast, we enjoyed stunning sea views before heading back to the hotel for a relaxing dip in the pool.
Before leaving, we decided to explore beyond the area we had biked the previous day. Driving toward the marina, we encountered worsening road conditions, with water flanking both sides of the road. What appeared to be manageable puddles proved treacherous when the sandy edge of the road gave way, and our Jeep slid into a ditch.
After several stressful hours and the help of a kind passerby with three different trucks, we managed to get back on the road. Exhausted but relieved, we continued to Placencia, where a cozy Airbnb awaited us, complete with a semi-private beachfront yard.
Placencia: Laid-Back Coastal Charm
Just before the start of the busy season, Placencia offered a peaceful, untouched charm that was a welcome respite. The absence of large corporate influences gave the town an authentic vibe, though the vacation homes lining the road hinted at its popularity among expats during winter.
Our days here were spent savoring local food, relaxing on the beach, and soaking in the town's relaxed atmosphere. Highlights included watching football at The Pickled Parrot, indulging in flavorful Belizean dishes at Barefoot Beach Bar, and ending evenings with dessert from Tuttifrutti Gelato.
Although frequent rain tempered our beach plans, Placencia's charm shone through, making even the quieter moments enjoyable.
Day 4-5
A Jungle Escape: Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge
From the coast, we ventured inland to Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge, a sprawling property that combines lush jungle, an old fruit orchard, and a meandering river. Unique activities like kayaking, hiking, and exploring The Nest, a treehouse platform, offered a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
After a day exploring the lodge's grounds, including its rope bridge and scenic trails, we dined on wood-fired pizza—a simpler and surprisingly satisfying choice compared to the more elaborate dining options.
The following day, a bike ride around the property led to an unforgettable encounter with free-roaming horses grazing in the orchard, a highlight of our stay.
Day 5-7
Adventures in San Ignacio and Tikal
Our inland journey continued to San Ignacio, where we visited Cahal Pech, a compact but fascinating archaeological site. While plans to visit Xunantunich were foiled by flooding, we spent the afternoon exploring the town's colorful streets and enjoying a mojito at The Burnz.
The next day, we embarked on a day trip to Tikal, one of the most significant Maya sites. The towering pyramids, sprawling plazas, and rich history made this excursion an awe-inspiring highlight. However, the journey was not without its challenges. The bumpy ride to Guatemala was a test of endurance, but the grandeur of Tikal far outweighed the journey's difficulties.
The Thrill of the ATM Cave
Our next adventure took us into the ATM Cave, where we waded through rivers, climbed rocks, and explored a sacred Maya chamber. The physical challenges of the cave, including the need to navigate through narrow passages and climb over rocks, added an exhilarating edge to this unforgettable experience. The once-thriving ceremonial site revealed skeletal remains and ancient artifacts, offering a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the past.
Day 7-9
Blancaneaux Lodge: A Grand Finale
The trip concluded at the luxurious Blancaneaux Lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Between inner tubing on the lodge's river, biking to Big Rock Falls, and exploring the grandeur of Rio Frio Cave, our stay was the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
Evenings were spent enjoying Happy Hour cocktails and wandering the lodge's vegetable farm and stables, followed by dinner at D Restaurant in nearby San Antonio.
Farewell to Belize
As our journey drew to a close, we reflected on the diverse experiences that made Belize so memorable. From the warmth of its people to the breathtaking natural beauty and rich history, Belize left an indelible mark on our hearts.
Belize is a destination that offers something for every traveler—be it adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion. We left with a deep sense of gratitude and a promise to return, knowing there's still much more to uncover in this enchanting country.
