Tucked away on Ireland’s stunning Ring of Kerry, Valentia Island was the highlight of our road trip through the Emerald Isle. With its rugged landscapes, rich history, and unspoiled beauty, this island feels like a secret waiting to be uncovered. From hiking trails with sweeping views to charming villages brimming with history, Valentia offers an ideal mix of adventure and relaxation.
When we visited in July, we were lucky enough to have beautiful, sunny weather—which definitely made our experience even more enjoyable. Keep in mind, though, that Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable, and a rainy day might put a damper on some of the outdoor activities. But even in less-than-perfect weather, Valentia Island has plenty of charm to offer!
Spend at Least One Day in Ireland on Valentia Island
Visit Knights Town
Knights Town, the main village on Valentia Island, is a colorful, charming spot full of history. The streets are lined with brightly painted buildings, and it has a welcoming atmosphere that feels authentically Irish. A must-see is the Valentia Heritage Centre, where you can learn about the island's significant role in the transatlantic cable history—the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable was laid here in 1866!
The history alone is worth the visit, but Knights Town also has some cozy cafes and little shops where you can grab a coffee or a souvenir. If you love immersing yourself in local history and culture, this village won't disappoint.
Visit Valentia Island Lighthouse

This 17th-century lighthouse is one of Valentia’s most iconic landmarks, offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. While we were disappointed to find it closed during our visit, we still had an adventure. We spent time exploring the rugged coastline and clambering over the rocks, which felt just as exhilarating as any tower climb.
For those who can access the lighthouse, the views from the top are said to be incredible, with vistas stretching across the island and over the ocean. If you love photography, this spot is a must! I recommend checking the opening times before your visit, but even if it's closed, the area around it is worth exploring.
Have a Picnic at Glanleam Beach
Glanleam Beach is a tranquil haven surrounded by lush greenery, perfect for a peaceful afternoon. We packed a picnic and enjoyed the calm waters and soft sand. Whether you want to sunbathe, take a refreshing dip, or simply enjoy the serene atmosphere, this beach is a hidden paradise.
The best part is the sense of solitude—we didn't see another person, allowing us to really unwind and appreciate the natural beauty around us. It’s ideal for families or couples looking for a quiet retreat. Pro tip: Bring a blanket and enjoy a nap or a good book after lunch!

Geokaun Mountain & Cliffs
If you’re a fan of hiking, don’t miss Geokaun Mountain. It’s the highest point on Valentia Island, and the views from the top are breathtaking. From here, you can see the Skellig Islands in the distance—famous as a filming location for Star Wars.
For a fee, you can drive up the mountain, with stops for short hikes on the way up. The hikes are easy and suitable for all fitness levels, but the real reward is at the summit where you’ll be surrounded by sweeping landscapes. This was one of my favorite parts of the trip.
Bray Head Loop Walk
The Bray Head Loop Walk offers another stunning vantage point for those who love scenic trails. This 5-kilometer loop takes about 1.5 hours and offers unobstructed views of the ocean and surrounding countryside. The path is well-maintained, and the walk is relatively easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
We walked this trail close to sunset, and I can’t recommend it enough—watching the sun dip below the horizon while surrounded by the island’s natural beauty was magical. You’ll also walk amongst local cows and sheep grazing peacefully along the trail, adding to the idyllic countryside feel.
Dinner in Portmagee
After a full day of exploring, we headed to nearby Portmagee, a short drive from Valentia, for dinner. Fisherman's Bar & Skellig Restaurant was the perfect spot to wind down. Known for its fresh seafood and welcoming atmosphere, this cozy restaurant served up one of our favorite hearty Irish dinners of the trip.
We couldn’t get enough of their fish and chips—it was some of the best we’ve ever had! If you’re a fan of seafood, this place is a must. The friendly staff made us feel right at home, and the charming pub setting was the perfect end to our adventure-packed day. The connected pub happened to have a Euro Cup soccer game playing, so after we finished our dinner, we were able to watch the game and drink a pint with the locals.
